How to Get Started in Your Job Search

Often, when clients are getting started on their job search, they quickly get overwhelmed. Taking the time to follow the steps below will allow you to relieve job search anxiety and have a structured path to landing your dream job!

1.  Recognize and celebrate  your strengths, values and abilities. Take the time to write down what you bring to a company. Think about compliments or positive reviews that you’ve received in previous jobs!
2.  Choose and research 3 Industries of interest. Compare your strengths and skills, then choose one industry to target.
3.  Decide on your ideal company size and preferred culture. Read reviews of companies online and make a list of 25 companies to target.
4.  Research ideal jobs in those companies. Note several job titles and required abilities and experience for those positions. Check your skills and experience. If gaps, decide how to close the gaps.
5.  Develop resume and LinkedIn profile. Make sure that they match your skills with your ideal job and company.
6.  Meet with people working in your focused industry. Reach out to potential companies and people who are doing what you’d like to do. Ask them for connections to jobs you’ve discovered on line.

7.  Learn all you can about the companies you apply to. Practice and prepare for interviews with family and friends until you are no longer nervous!

When you follow these steps, you’ll walk into your next job interview with confidence and clarity.
